Good Samaritan School
Good Samaritan School Opened its doors in 1960 and has been serving students with developmental disabilities in Defiance County for 65 Years!
Good Samaritan School serves students from Preschool up to the age of 22 who need support for significant and multifaceted disabilities. The students we serve at Good Samaritan still hold their seat in their local school district with Good Samaritan School serving as the least restrictive educational setting to help the student accomplish their personal and educational goals. The school has Preschool, Primary, Intermediate, Vocational, and Transition classrooms focusing on students with profound developmental disabilities, severe autism, and students with high medical needs. The Defiance County Board of DD, including the Good Samaritan School, is a resource for all Defiance County residents, even those who are not formally enrolled in either the Defiance County Board of DD or Good Samaritan School.
Good Samaritan School Works Hard to Create a School and Community Where
Every Person Belongs!
Our class sizes are limited to seven students and at maximum a eight student to two teacher/aide ratio. The students experience individualized instruction to help them make progress in their grade-level curriculum. Due to our enrollment numbers, students move up with the same teacher for several years to ensure each student is well-known by our staff, and parents/support systems have the opportunity to experience our family atmosphere.
We follow guidelines and regulations laid down by the Ohio Department of Education. The law requires that an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which outlines goals, objectives and services for each student be developed. The focus of the IEP is to develop skills in communication, self-help, functional daily living, social interaction, cognitive development, and vocational preparation and training. Student progress is reported quarterly with an annual review of the student’s IEP. Students who attend Good Samaritan School are alternately assessed. The curriculum that is utilized is The Unique Learning Systems Curriculum which adheres to the Ohio Content Standards (Extended). All teachers are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education and staff participate in professional development on a regular basis.
We are a Team!
Our school staff works in conjunction with our intervention specialists and paraprofessionals to help the students access their education and achieve success. Additional services included as designated by the IEP:
• Behavioral Supports • Community Education • Nursing • Occupational Therapy • Physical Therapy |
• Service Coordination • Social Interaction • Speech Language Pathology • Transportation • Vocational Training and Job Development |
How Are Students Referred for Services?
Students are referred for services at Good Samaritan School through the IEP team process in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). If an IEP team determines that a child is not best served in their home district, the home district, in compliance with all state and federal laws, may choose to contact the Defiance County Board of DD.
Good Samaritan School’s typical school day is 8:25am – 2:20pm. We provide a breakfast and lunch program according to the guidelines set forth by the Ohio Department of Education and United States Department of Agriculture. Good Samaritan School at the DCBDD currently provides school services to 62 students.
